Our NEW edition of ‘The Bradfordian’ (Issue 352, Autumn 2018) is now available to view online. This is BGS’s annual publication that includes a record of the school year featuring news from across the Junior, Senior and Sixth Form including ‘Community, Societies and Activities, ‘Events’, ‘Trips and Visits’, ‘Arts and Performance’ and ‘Sport’.

A message from the Headmaster, Simon Hinchliffe

“The countless goings-on that characterise life at Bradford Grammar School (BGS) are celebrated in the pages that follow. Not an exhaustive digest by any means, but a lively snapshot of our wonderful school. I hope you enjoy all that follows and share in the great pride I feel when reflecting on the commitment of our young people to take full advantage of the opportunities available at BGS. The ‘Hoc Age’ spirit is alive and well at the modern BGS.

We were delighted with the assessments of both ISI and The Good Schools Guide, and then, to hear unbidden, that BGS had been awarded the accolade of ‘The Sunday Times Northern Independent School of the Year 2018’ layered much icing on the cake. Alastair McCall, Editor of the Sunday Times Parent Power, said: “Bradford Grammar is in a good place, combining strong academic performance with a caring culture that encourages all students to excel in their chosen field, both within and outside the classroom. The school explicitly puts pupils’ happiness at the centre of what it does. In an age of growing fears about the pressures put on children to succeed, this enlightened approach helps BGS stand out from the crowd. It’s a deserving winner of our award.”

We are however in no way self-satisfied. We do not get cocky. We get on with the job. It is this quality about BGS, the manner in which high aspiration is achieved and understood – no nonsense, grounded, down to earth – that makes us special. Success is embraced with characteristic Bradfordian modesty. I perceive this to be a virtue.

I wrote in the programme for Speech Day recently, “our world has its troubles, but schools like BGS, and the young people they help to nurture, play a positive role in wider society and that gives me justified cause for optimism and hope”. The pages that follow serve only to strengthen my faith in our young people.
I hope you enjoy reading this latest edition of ‘The Bradfordian’.”
