Welcome from the Head of Year 12

‘For me, seeing that success in young people is immensely rewarding. It’s magical watching them become proud of themselves, moving beyond their own expectations, and achieving great things.’

Sarah Flaherty, Head of Year 12
Welcome to the Sixth Form. This is a place where young people find their niche, embrace opportunity and discover what makes them special.

Being a teacher at BGS is about celebrating amazing and transformative achievements as our students excel academically and in sports, music, and other extracurricular pursuits. Our students take advantage of all the opportunities that are open to them and they truly become the very best versions of themselves, which doesn’t conform to a script or model. We help our students to fulfil their own visions.

For me, seeing that success in young people is immensely rewarding. It’s magical watching them become proud of themselves, moving beyond their own expectations, and achieving great things. This happens on stage, on the sports pitches, and in the classroom. We recognise the powerful, even life-changing, rewards that come from embracing new challenges. When students leave this school, they do so with life-long friends, integrity and fond memories, equipped with what they need for the next stage in their lives as bright, confident members of our global society.

In our Sixth Form, students gain so much more than just academic skills, thanks to the array of activities they participate in above and beyond their academic curriculum.

Our enrichment programme offers them opportunities to take short courses such as finance, public speaking, Italian and cooking. They can also can take part in our Duke of Edinburgh scheme or try one of our many and wide-ranging volunteering opportunities. Whatever your child’s talent, they will shine in the Sixth Form at BGS, where opportunity is key.

Welcome to our new-look Sixth Form Centre

Our senior students now have a newly redesigned Sixth Form Centre, a spacious light-filled space where they can excel in their studies, unwind and eat with their friends.

The fully accessible centre includes designated zones for private study and relaxation and features a new IT suite, complete with fast, wireless connectivity, and a cafe with a fresh, seasonal menu served daily.

Ross McOwen, Head of Year 13, said: “Having opened our original Sixth Form Centre in 2001, we felt the time was right to create the ideal professional environment in which our evolving vision for our students could be realised, enabling them to flourish, whatever their chosen career pathway.

“The fresh look, with attention given to every detail of the post-16 experience, will provide our senior students with bespoke accommodation which reflects the finest, state-of-the-art facilities befitting a school such as BGS.”

Rebecca and Tayjus - BGS Head Prefects for 2023-24

Meet Rebecca & Tayjus – Head Prefects 2023/24

We caught up with this year’s Head Prefects to find out how they have settled into their new roles and to discover a little more about their time and experiences at Bradford Grammar School.

“Since joining BGS in Year 2, I’ve always looked up to the Head Girls. I’ve aspired to be like them, and I really wanted to be that role model for the younger girls in school now.” Rebecca.

“I wanted to encourage other students to get the most out of school as possible – to try new things and get stuck in.” Tayjus.

Meet Jane – Assistant Head Pastoral

“Our Pastoral Prefects will be trained as Youth Mental Health First Aiders so that they will know when to pass on a safeguarding concern and how to identify and pass on concerns they might have about a child’s wellbeing or safety.

The staff on the Pastoral Team (tutors, Head of Years, nurses and counsellor) are very much looking forward to this new wing of pastoral support at BGS and to their helping our students to navigate the pressures and stresses of Generation Z’s teenage years.”
