GCSE student and cricket star Venus W to front Sky documentary days after Lancashire debut
Bradford Grammar School pupil Venus, currently sitting her GCSEs is set to front a national Sky documentary this weekend—just days after taking a wicket on her senior debut for Lancashire Women.
Venus W, 16 takes a leading role in Sky Kids Investigates: Girls Changing The Game, which airs on Sky News and Sky Kids this Saturday (6 June).
The documentary explores why nearly half of girls drop out of sport as teenagers and follows young athletes determined to overcome barriers and reach the top. Venus was selected as a leading voice on the programme because of her remarkable rise as one of the country’s most exciting cricketing prospects.
Her television debut caps a remarkable week for the young leg-spinner. Last Friday, Venus received her first senior call-up to Lancashire Women’s Vitality Blast squad and marked the occasion by claiming a wicket on debut.
The breakout star has enjoyed a phenomenal 12 months. In late 2025, she won the prestigious Charlotte Edwards Award for Outstanding Under-16 Schoolgirl Cricketer after taking 124 wickets across the season, making her the highest wicket-taker in the country at her level. Her form also earned her a call-up to the England Women’s Under-19 winter training squad.
Venus is balancing the media spotlight and elite sport with her GCSE exams at BGS. She said: It has been an absolute whirlwind of a few weeks. Being involved in the documentary was an incredible experience because we look at the real challenges girls face in sport, but we also celebrate those who are pushing through.
“I hope the programme encourages more girls to stay involved in sport and believe they can achieve their goals. Cricket has given me so many opportunities, and I would love to see more girls stick with the sports they love.
“To then get the call-up for Lancashire and take a wicket on my debut was a dream come true. It’s definitely a busy time with my GCSEs happening right now, but I’m incredibly grateful to my teachers at BGS who have helped me balance revision with training and filming.”
Dr Simon Hinchliffe, BGS Headmaster, said: “Venus is an exceptional young woman whose achievements continue to inspire our entire school community.
“To be one of the faces of a national television documentary while making a senior Lancashire debut and sitting GCSEs is an extraordinary achievement for a 16-year-old.
“She embodies the resilience, ambition and dedication we encourage in all our students, and we are immensely proud to support her.”
Sky Kids Investigates: Girls Changing The Game airs on Sky News at 2.30pm on Saturday 6 June and will also be available on Sky Kids and TVCU.
