Bradford Grammar School’s rich programme of sport, music and wider co-curricular activities is celebrated twice each year through the awarding of Colours.

These honours recognise pupils’ commitment to, and excellence in, activities beyond the classroom. Full Senior Colours represent the highest accolade, awarded to pupils who have demonstrated sustained dedication over several years, represented the School with distinction, and developed into leaders within their field.

Club Colours provide a more accessible pathway, recognising consistent commitment with less emphasis on high-level achievement. Both awards are highly valued by pupils, offering meaningful recognition of their contributions to school life.

This half term, we were proud to award Full Senior Colours to 26 members of the Bradford Grammar School Sixth Form. These pupils have been the beating heart of BGS Debating, Drama, Music, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Swimming and Water Polo, and the School’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Many parents joined us in School for the Awards Assembly, along with a celebratory breakfast attended by the Headmaster, members of the Senior Leadership Team, and staff who lead these activities. As always, it was a warm and memorable occasion, celebrating both individual achievement and the collective strength of our co-curricular community.

The Colours programme continues to evolve in line with the growing diversity of BGS’s co-curricular offering. Recent additions to Sport Colours include Orienteering, reflecting the School’s success in producing national team and individual champions, and Table Tennis, introduced in response to a thriving club achieving recognition at regional and national level.

This year’s review marks a more significant development with the introduction of a new category: School Colours. Previously, awards were presented for Music, Sport, Drama and Debating. While Debating remains an important part of the School’s co-curricular life, it now forms part of this broader category. School Colours recognise pupils who demonstrate commitment, progress and representation of the School across a wide range of activities, whether through competition, performance or participation.

In its first year, School Colours are being awarded for contributions in three key areas of school life. Debating continues to be a particular strength of BGS, with pupils achieving success in high-level national competitions. The CCF, which has seen significant growth and transformation in recent years, is also recognised. As one of the School’s fastest-growing activities, it offers valuable opportunities for leadership development and adventurous experience. In addition, the LEGO Robotics team will receive School Colours following its impressive achievement in reaching the international finals in Florida, where pupils competed with confidence against well-resourced teams from around the world.

The introduction of School Colours provides greater flexibility, enabling the School to recognise achievement and commitment in areas that may previously have gone uncelebrated within this framework. This year highlights Debating, CCF and LEGO Robotics—but the category is designed to evolve, ensuring that excellence across the full breadth of School life continues to be acknowledged and celebrated
