Aspiring stage star Charlotte D has been accepted onto a highly competitive musical theatre course at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, one of the UK’s leading performing arts conservatoires.

The Year 13 Bradford Grammar School (BGS) student from Halifax received confirmation of her place on the coveted Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre following an intensive audition process involving self-tapes and a full-day recall assessment at Italia Conti’s Woking campus.

Charlotte, who studies Drama, Latin and Psychology at A level, said: “I found out at school and just burst into tears. It was complete relief as much as excitement — knowing I’d got into my first-choice place and that all the work had paid off. From the moment I auditioned at Italia Conti, it just felt right.”

A dancer from the age of three, Charlotte trains at Shine Theatre Arts in Halifax, where she has completed Advanced 2 Ballet, the International Dance Teachers Association’s highest vocational qualification. She has also achieved tap, jazz and theatre craft qualifications.

She is now undertaking a Level 4 Diploma in Dance Teaching, delivering her own musical theatre classes as well as assisting in tap and jazz classes to pupils aged three to 14 every Saturday.

Charlotte said: “Teaching dance has made me a more thoughtful performer. You learn to spot detail, reflect on technique and understand how people learn — and seeing younger students’ enthusiasm has reaffirmed my own passion for dance.”

Alongside her dance training, Charlotte has pursued extensive acting and vocal development. She has achieved distinctions at every level of LAMDA acting, including Grade 8, and is currently preparing for Grade 8 Musical Theatre. She also attends weekly acting classes with Soar Performance Academy and weekly singing lessons with the Sian Pattison Academy.

Charlotte has trained with a number of professional musical theatre programmes, including the Denman Theatre musical theatre programme, before progressing to Nottingham Musical Theatre Associates, where she works with industry professionals including Graeme Pickering and Steve Pritchett.

At BGS, Charlotte has performed in five major shows, including My Fair Lady and The Addams Family and will play the lead role of Principal Rosalie Mullins in the upcoming School of Rock. She has also supported younger pupils as Assistant Director for the Junior School production of Peter Pan.

Beyond school, Charlotte is involved in charity performance work, including Concerts for the Young at Heart, a variety show taking place in March at the Victoria Theatre, in Halifax, supporting older people experiencing loneliness.

Charlotte, who trains, performs and teaches at least 15 hours each week alongside her studies, credits the school’s drama department with broadening her performance approach. She said: “A level Drama has pushed me beyond naturalistic performance — exploring different practitioners, devising work and challenging styles. It’s made me far more adaptable as a performer.”

As part of her Sixth Form studies, Charlotte completed an Extended Project Qualification exploring the impact of tango on the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease, reflecting her interest in the wider social and wellbeing benefits of dance.

Looking ahead, Charlotte hopes to pursue a professional career in musical theatre, with ambitions spanning the West End, touring productions, cruise performance and pantomime.

Dr Simon Hinchliffe, Headmaster at BGS, said: “Charlotte’s success reflects not only her exceptional talent and work ethic, but the extraordinary commitment she shows to developing herself and supporting others. She has made an enormous contribution to the creative life of the school, and we are delighted that she has been awarded a place at Italia Conti.”
