The lives of more than 200 former students of a Yorkshire independent school have been remembered in a poignant piece of artwork created by current pupils.
As Remembrance Day approaches, dozens of pupils at Bradford Grammar Junior School have been working with their art teacher, Sally Morley, to create poppy designs, each featuring the name of a past pupil of the school who died during World War 1 or as a result of their injuries afterwards.
The poppies have been hung together as part of a striking window display at the school and will run alongside a Remembrance assembly on November 11, where a student from the senior school will perform The Last Post and the children will learn more about the lives of some of the men.
The school archive has the name, age and place of death of each solider. While most died in France and Belgium, a fallen few died further afield in places such as Basra, in Iraq, and Archangel, in Russia.
Jane Disley, Acting Headmistress at the Junior School, said the school now had pictures and biographies of nearly all of the soldiers.
She added: “It’s important for the children to understand the sacrifices these men made and how we can remember them in different ways. I wrote the names on the back of each poppy and then the pupils painted it with their art teacher so each one is individual. They look wonderful on display all together.”
