Bradford has long been known for its fantastic manufacturing heritage. However, instead of just the historic textile industry of old, today’s manufacturers in Bradford are also known for their cutting edge technologies and for targeting global markets with their innovative products.
Bradford is a richly diverse and multi-layered city and there are opportunities for everyone. This is why BGS has become one of the first schools to get behind Bradford Manufacturing Week. We are proud of Bradford and there is a new wave of positivity about the city and its surroundings that we are delighted to be a part of. We need to capitalise on this momentum and help encourage young people from all backgrounds to take advantage of what the city has to offer.
To achieve this aim, we need strong partnerships and the Manufacturing Week from 8 to 12 October will be built upon these foundations. They will comprise partnerships between schools, such as BGS, and employers, such as Spooners, Keighley Laboratories, KONE and BASF, as we bid to reach more than 20,000 14 to 18 year old students across the Bradford district and create more than 1,000 work experience days.
Work experience with real value will offer students the opportunity to see for themselves just how exciting a career in manufacturing can be. We also hope that it might be the beginning of a positive and long-term professional relationship, which may potentially lead to careers for thousands of young people.
An additional aim of Bradford Manufacturing Week is to also boost apprenticeship numbers (which are low nationally and in Bradford) via events, tours, company visits and seminars. We want young people to see for themselves what exciting and progressive career opportunities there are in manufacturing and, by improving communication between schools and manufacturers, we can demonstrate what an innovative industry it is.
One of our most important responsibilities as educators here at BGS is to inform our students about the world of work that lies ahead of them, so that they can make the best career decisions for themselves – this initiative is one way to do just that.
