Shree Bhattacharjee
A pupil from Bradford Grammar School (BGS) won a poetry award judged by the family of William Wordsworth.

‘Deep Waters’ by 14-year-old Shree Bhattacharjee, from Brighouse, won the Senior School Commended poetry award for young people, organised annually by the poet’s descendants including William’s great great great great grandson.

In celebrating World Heritage status, the theme this year of ‘Deep Waters’ had poetic potential. It can refer to physical water in the Lake District, but it can have resonance to emotions and feelings. Water, rivers and waterfalls were important parts in living nature to William Wordsworth.

Shree said: “It was really exciting to win the award and I was honoured to be judged by the descendants of the Wordsworth family. I enjoyed going to Rydal Mount and seeing all the pictures and painting of the Wordsworth family.”

The Rydal Mount Wordsworth prize for young poets competition, now in its sixth year, attracted nearly 200 entries. Awards were presented at Rydal Mount near Ambleside where Wordsworth lived for most of his life.
