An aspiring engineer at Bradford Grammar School is celebrating today after securing a place at the University of Leeds to study Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering – following the path his late mother had hoped for him.
Abdullah M, 18, achieved an A* in Maths, A in Further Maths, A in Physics and an A* in Computer Science and will begin his BEng at Leeds this autumn.
His academic success comes after a challenging final school year. Abdullah’s mother, Misbah, a former maths teacher, lost an eight-year battle with cancer in September 2025, just as he was beginning Year 13. Despite the loss, Abdullah maintained focus and dedication to his studies.
“My mother encouraged me to follow my passion,” said Abdullah, from Bradford. “She valued education and encouraged me to work hard. She propagated the notion that knowledge is power and wanted me to work towards my goal of becoming an aeronautical engineer.
“I’m happy with my results, especially the two A*s. All the hard work has paid off and I’m excited to be going to Leeds.”
Proud dad, Sajid Mahmood, added: “I’m very happy for him today, especially as I was worried about him being here without his mum. He’s done so well.”
Abdullah joined BGS in the Sixth Form on an Assisted Place, adapting to a rigorous new academic environment while throwing himself into co-curricular life. He enjoyed playing badminton, joined the Maths Society and took part in the Raspberry Pi Competition, a national STEM challenge focused on coding and technology.
“When I first came to BGS I didn’t know anyone, but I made good friends and grew much more confident,” Abdullah said. “Stepping outside my comfort zone to meet new people and take part in new activities is something I’m really proud of.”
Offering advice to other young people navigating difficult circumstances alongside their studies, Abdullah emphasised the importance of routine and staying connected.
“Establishing a consistent routine and avoiding isolation makes a huge difference,” he said. “Staying connected with friends, family and teachers helps you manage challenges more effectively. Remembering that A Levels are only a temporary stage and keeping sight of what lies ahead helped me stay focused.”
Dr Simon Hinchliffe, Head at BGS, paid tribute to Abdullah’s character and achievements.
“Abdullah represents the very best of Bradford Grammar School,” said Dr Hinchliffe. “To achieve excellent academic results while showing such dignity, maturity and quiet strength is remarkable.
“Misbah’s influence as a dedicated teacher and mother is clearly reflected in Abdullah’s work ethic and humility. We’re immensely proud of him and know he has a bright future ahead in aeronautical engineering.”
