An inspiring teenager who launched her own charity to help other children with cancer is celebrating after receiving fantastic GCSE results.
Tabby Wood, 16, a student at Bradford Grammar School (BGS), set up Tabby’s Trust earlier this year, to help other children and their families in hospital after going through her own battle with a rare form of ovarian cancer.
So far Tabby, with the help of her family, who live in Burley-in-Wharfedale, and friends at BGS, has raised more than £24.5k for other charities, with one of the biggest challenges last summer being a gruelling 250-mile cycle ride from London to Leeds.
Undaunted by the constraints of self-isolating, Tabby has also continued to find ways to support the local community during the summer: she has been volunteering with Leeds Children’s Hospital, producing literature, a podcast and short film for young people about Coronavirus, and has just been appointed a Junior Covid Young Ambassador for the Bradford region by Bradford City Council.
Now the teenager, who is in remission, is celebrating after gaining three grade 9s, six grade 8s, and a grade 7 in her GCSE results.
Tabby said: “I am really proud of my results, especially my 9 in Biology which is my favourite subject! I’m looking forward to Sixth Form and have decided to take A Levels in Chemistry, Biology, and History, alongside an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification). Having spent so long in hospital I know what a difference a good medic can make, so after that I’d like to go into medicine or become a vet”.
Tabby was diagnosed with a rare form of fast-growing ovarian cancer when she was just 13. The keen horse rider had shown few symptoms other than feeling tired and a lump in her stomach. Tests showed she had a tumour the size of a melon and she underwent emergency surgery at LGI to remove it.
Sarah Wood, Tabby’s mum, said: “We’re all very proud of Tabby and she’s done so well. The last week has been difficult, with more uncertainty than expected around results, but we’re really pleased that she has achieved such great results and worked so hard at school, alongside her fundraising and volunteering for children like her.”
Dr Simon Hinchliffe, headmaster at BGS, said: “We’re all incredibly proud of Tabby and the exceptional person she has become. Her resilient spirit is the very essence of Bradford Grammar, particularly in the way she thinks of others and gives back to the community. Well done Tabby.”
