Junior School Development

at Bradford Grammar School

Our family is growing

From September 2024, Bradford Grammar Junior School will be admitting Reception and Year 1 pupils.

Welcome to our page dedicated to sharing the latest information about the exciting expansion plans for the Junior School which will see us accepting children from Reception age as of September 2024.

Work will start on our fantastic new building next to Clock House in Summer 2023 and, over the year, we’re looking forward to seeing our natural outdoor spaces transformed for all pupils with the creation of a mud kitchen, construction area, woodland exploration area, treehouse and outdoor performance space.

Our new development will add to all that is wonderful about Bradford Grammar School – our amazing libraries, outstanding sports facilities, indoor swimming pool, small class sizes, specialist teaching staff and wrap around care.

Frequently Asked Questions

The development plan has two parts: launching two new classes of up to 20 children, Reception (age 4-5) and Year 1 (age 5-6) in a newly created, purpose built space located next to Clock House. We are also developing the grounds around Clock House to develop the outdoor learning and play spaces for children throughout their school journey.

The new building will be spacious, light and modern but in keeping with the existing campus. The building will comprise two purpose-built classrooms, a lobby which incorporates an entrance space, a multi- purpose space for dining, a kitchen and wrap around care. It will also include a designated play space and free flow access to an EYFS outdoor provision. The building’s close proximity to Clock House will allow for close links for the whole Junior School.

In Reception, our curriculum will be based upon the Early Years Framework and include areas of continuous provision for the children to use every day. Firm roots will be planted for academic growth with a focus on high quality English and maths development, whilst ensuring a broad curriculum is maintained. Clock House children in Reception will also benefit from specialist teaching in several areas including music, languages and sport.

Our Year 1 children will benefit from a thematic approach which will nurture and develop the seeds of learning sown during the previous school year. The themes will change each term, enabling an innovative and creative approach to learning which will engage and enthuse our youngest learners. Year 1 pupils will benefit from the full array of National Curriculum subjects and some, such as mathematics, will be delivered discretely. The specialist teaching enjoyed throughout Clock House will also be a regular part of the timetable in Year 1.

Extra-curricular activities are a huge part of Clock House life and will be available to all pupils in the Junior School including Reception. The number of clubs will increase as pupils move up through the School to allow for important developmental play. Clubs for our youngest children will include sports, creative and special interest provision. The majority of our clubs take place within the school day and are included in fees. The activities on offer change termly to allow pupils to experience a range of opportunities.

Our specialist catering team will offer a range of balanced meals throughout the week with lots to tempt even the pickiest of eaters. Dietary requirements are considered and children in Reception and Year 1 will eat their lunch in their own allocated dining space in the new building. Families may opt for a school meal at a small additional cost, in keeping with our competitive fees, or children may choose to bring their own packed lunch to eat alongside their friends.

Our current high-quality wrap around provision will provide flexible support for families of pupils from Reception to Year 6. Early morning care will extend to operate, without charge, from 7.30am until 8.30am. The children will be supervised by a dedicated team of primary specialists in age appropriate spaces. Breakfast will be available during this time at a small charge in the new Reception/Year 1 building for the younger children. As part of their preparation for Senior School life, our Years 5 and 6 children will continue to be welcome at breakfast in the main school dining hall.

For our new year groups, After Care will be available from 3.20pm to 6.00pm during term time. The service is currently available to all Clock House children and is free of charge until 4.00pm, to support families with children across the school. After 4.00pm, a charge is applied. For the academic year 2023/24 the After Care will be £5.15 per hour or part of an hour.

Children will enjoy a range of engaging activities, including indoor and outdoor play, craft and games.

Children staying after 4.00pm are provided with a drink and a snack and are supported to complete homework, as appropriate.

Clock House is an academically selective setting which understands that young children demonstrate potential in a range of ways. Assessments for our youngest children will be carried out by an experienced Early Years professional and be tailored to their age and development. Our assessment process is designed to evaluate a child’s aptitude for learning, potential for academic growth and personal and social development. The assessment morning will include an age-appropriate, classroom based assessment. A report from the child’s current school or setting will also be requested.

Children will be invited to attend school in small groups on allocated assessment mornings, predominantly in the spring term, although on a needs basis individual assessments are welcomed at other points in the school year.

In line with our current offering, our Key Stage 1 and Reception children will benefit from our lowest fee. For the academic year 2023/24 the fee has been agreed at £10,995 and includes specialist lessons in languages, music and sport, as well as wrap around care between 7.30am and 4.00pm and a range of extra-curricular opportunities.
