Welcome from the Headmaster

‘We genuinely believe in the power of an inspiring and well-rounded education to build character and fundamentally change lives for the better.’

Headmaster, Simon Hinchliffe
Welcome to Bradford Grammar School (BGS): a leading co-educational independent day school in Yorkshire.

Academically selective and socially inclusive, BGS offers a vibrant and supportive community in which to learn and grow.

Rich in history, we can trace our origins back to before 1548 and continue to be recognised nationally as a beacon of excellence. Old fashioned and stuffy, however, we are not. Across generations, BGS’s story remains one of confident movement with the times. Walk from the grand Price Hall through to the modern Clarkson Library, and you will be struck by the easy blend of the traditional and innovative – sector-leading educational approaches which BGS achieves for its students.

We rightly place a premium on love of learning, active engagement with academic studies and wider co-curricular interests that do much to foster character.

Underpinning all of this is a School ethos that encourages us to respect, look out for and support each other. Expert and intuitive form tutors and pastoral leaders know our children well, providing bespoke support and a steering influence.

The breadth of our peer support networks, democratic student voice forums and mentoring arrangements speak volumes about the climate here at BGS. Reflecting our School values of Excellence, Opportunity, Compassion, Determination and Service, we are a cohesive and balanced School providing a springboard into later adult life.

BGS is an aspirational and caring school that knows what it is about, but looks outwardly to make a positive impact upon the world.

Students are respected as individuals and thrive in an environment which promotes ambition and provides the tools and self-belief to aspire and achieve great things – all while remembering to have fun along the way.

Why not come along to one of our Open Days and see for yourself what BGS can offer your child?

Meet Elsa – Year 11 pupil 21/22

A teenager who plays football for Bradford City was celebrating scoring straight 9s in her GCSEs today.

Elsa Foster, 16, a student at Bradford Grammar School (BGS), was overjoyed with her 11 GCSEs at grade 9 – to add to the grade 9 in French which she secured when she was just 14.

She said: “I’m still in shock at seeing my results. You never know what you’re going to get until you turn up, I’m really pleased with them.”

Meet Stuart – Head of Design Technology

“I can remember one student coming to our department once saying they had double Maths, Physics and Further Maths and that they just wanted to come here and make something. My aim as Head of Design Technology is to make this a space where students can make whatever’s in their head.

Our students have good, really interesting careers ahead of them where they can make a real difference. They can end up travelling and working abroad on fantastic projects and with innovative companies.”
