Project Description

“You can’t fail to be impressed by the people, the facilities and the academic excellence. There is also so much on offer and when a child has potential they realise that by coaxing it out of them into a reality.”

Why did you choose Bradford Grammar School (BGS) for your child?

“When we chose it for our son it was the reputation it has that initially caught our attention.

My daughter Clementine, who attends BGS Sixth Form, had an older brother who came to the School, so we were familiar with it. My father also attended and I went to Bradford Girls Grammar School – so I was always interested in having my children here.

When we visited the School, had a look around and made some enquiries with teachers and pupils alike – it was a no-brainer. It’s just such an impressive building and the facilities are amazing. That initial glance into the Great Price Hall will always stay with me – I was literally blown away. The staff are all very open, honest and approachable which really made me feel at ease.

We were also given a tour by a pupil, which is a really nice touch. We felt we could get a really positive and honest opinion that could easily relate to Clementine and how she may feel at the School. The students gave a different point of view from the teachers, although equally important, which helped our decision process come together.

But most importantly, Clementine wanted to come to BGS desperately, because of the way the School challenges independent thought and for the Music and Drama departments. It was always our first choice. Everything else just reaffirmed what we already knew and felt.

What do you think BGS offers that other schools don’t?

“I like the tradition and heritage side of BGS, although it has a forward approach, it’s nice that it stays grounded to its roots.

The range of Music subjects and extra-curricular activities are so great and varied, which I hadn’t seen at other schools. All of my children are quite musical and Clementine, in particular, is into Drama and Theatre Studies. It’s her passion. So this really set BGS apart.

It was those things that the School had to offer really that makes it different and unique. The enthusiasm that’s embedded in the School for performance and the arts is taken really seriously here, alongside all other subjects – this really stood out to me as a parent.

Another thing that really stands out for me is the accessibility of the teachers – if I have a query, I can email them and they get back to me straight away. I think that’s brilliant. You don’t even have to ring up. They’re so amenable and helpful and they really bring out the best in each student.

How has attending BGS impacted on your child’s daily life?

“Well Clementine has always been very hard working and determined from when she was very young.

I just knew she would thrive at the School. Being at BGS has improved her confidence a lot in everything really, not just academically but her overall confidence. She also has a lot of friends and loves spending time with them at School; they all encourage one another, which is lovely.

Academically she’s really come on and is doing very well in exams and A Levels. I think it’s made her ambitious. She’s seen what older and former pupils have achieved, and are continuing to achieve – so she’s got her eyes set quite high. BGS encourages students to be independent and brings out the best in them. For Clementine I’d say so far, so good!

What does your child most enjoy about BGS?

“She really enjoys her relationships with the teachers, particularly in Sixth Form with the small classes.

It’s a very personal approach the teachers take with the students. She’s also really enjoying doing the subjects she’s chosen such as Theatre Studies and Music. She gets involved in everything including performing in the concerts, choir, orchestra and bands. I know it’s because she’s so passionate about them and it’s really giving her more confidence with this mature side of learning in Sixth Form.

“BGS encourages students to be independent and brings out the best in them.”
