Bursaries

Our bursaries create opportunities for young people from a wide spectrum of backgrounds across Yorkshire to access an outstanding education and a diverse, happy learning environment.

Bradford Grammar School is pleased to offer a number of means-tested bursaries for new pupils joining us in Year 7 (age 11) and the Sixth Form (age 16). Bradford Grammar School does not provide bursary awards for Junior School pupils.

      Bradford Grammar School operates a Bursary Fund which aims to provide financial assistance to approximately 10 children who do exceptionally well (finishing in the top 10% of all candidates) in the Year 7 Senior School bursary assessment and Entrance Examination but whose parents are unable to afford the fees. 

      Bursary applicants will take an initial assessment on 6 or 7 December 2017 (please note there are no specimen questions available for this assessment).  This assessment will involve a taught Maths and English lesson followed by a short written test. Those candidates who finish at the top of this assessment will be informed by letter and will automatically go forward to sit the Year 7 Entrance Examination in January 2018. 

      Bursary Financial Assessments forms will be included with the letter and will need to be completed and returned with all supporting documentation by Monday 8 January 2017 at the very latest. Any incomplete forms or forms received after 8 January will not be considered.

      Final decisions on which applicants will receive a bursary and the amount of the award will be made once the results of the Entrance Examination are available. Scores from the Bursary Assessment test and Entrance Exams will be added together to determine which children will receive the offer of an award. All decisions will be full and final.

      Those children who do not qualify for a bursary award following this initial assessment will be informed and parents will then have the option of whether or not to enter their son/daughter for a full-fee place at the Year 7 Entrance Examinations.  The Entrance Examinations are scheduled to take place during the week commencing 22 January 2018, further details of which will be forwarded at the start of January 2018.

      Bursaries are given on a means-tested basis and will be reviewed annually.  The award depends on parental circumstances, demand at the time of the examination and the academic ability of the candidate. Demand for bursary assistance is always significantly in excess of monies available. It may be, therefore, that because of the performance of the candidate in the examination we may be able to offer a place but with no financial assistance.

      To start the entry process you need to register your child online
      www.bradfordgrammar.com. Application forms and bursary information will then be posted out at the end of October 2017 when we commence procedures for Year 7 entry 2018.

      To apply for a bursary you need to be confident that your child will be able to achieve excellent results in the Year 7 Bursary Assessment and Entrance Examination.  Your Primary School Head Teacher or Year 6 teacher should also be approached for advice.  Please note that we are only able to offer approximately 10 bursaries and competition for these awards is extremely fierce.

      Details of the amount of any bursary award are sent out with the offer of a place in February 2018 if applicable.  As a general rule a bursary could be awarded to those families whose total income is up to £65,000 (earnings include salaries, benefits, profits, investment income etc.) and whose children finish within the top 10% of all candidates sitting the Year 7 examination and initial bursary assessment.  Please note we do not award bursaries of 100%.

      The closing date for bursary applications to be received by us is Wednesday 22 November 2017.

      If you wish to apply for a bursary please indicate this on your Sixth Form application form. Candidates looking for bursary support will need gain a minimum of 8 A* grades at GCSE. It may be that, because of the performance of the candidate in her/his GCSEs, we are able to offer a place but with no bursary support.
