Skills for life

Tennis is taught as part of the curricular PE & Games lessons during the Summer term. However, there is also the opportunity for those who wish, to pursue their interest during lunchtimes in the Summer, and on Wednesday afternoon.

The school fields two boys teams at all age levels from Under 12 to Under 15 along with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and Under 16 team. The girls currently field one team at Under 12 to Under 15 level along with a 1st and 2nd team.

During the year the boys’ teams take part in the Glanvill Cup, National Schools tournament for Under 13 and Under 15s, Northern Schools’ Tournaments for Under 12s to Under 19s as well as the prestigious Youll Cup and Thomas Bowl at Eton. The girls’ teams take part in the Aberdare Cup, National Schools’ tournaments for Under 13 and Under 15, the Jubilee Cup for Under 13, 15 and 19s and the ISTA Ashbury Bailey and Loveband tournaments at Eton.

All the teams have the opportunity to tour, with annual Junior tours for the Under 15s and younger and a biennial overseas mixed tour for the senior teams.

BGS also hosts its own tennis tournaments each year for all age groups and boys and girls at Under 14 level take part in the annual Road to Wimbledon tournament.

Tennis has a very active Tennis Parents’ Association who support the teams at fixtures as well as running very enjoyable and successful fundraising events which include the annual May Ball, Quiz and Curry nights, a Murder Mystery event, Cheese & Wine and ballroom dancing evening.
