On the tarn

Sailing is one of the many fantastic sports that BGS has to offer.  During the first half of the Winter term and the Spring term, a group of students go to Doe Park, or sometimes Yeadon Tarn, to sail, kayak and windsurf. Both venues provide a range of boats such as Toppers, Topazs, Omegas, Magnos, and at Doe Park there is also a Laser and a Laser Regatta.

Each week we do some training exercises covering important sailing skills such as upwind and downwind sailing, roll tacking, racing starts and sailing courses around the lake.  Strange as it seems, a lot of us are particularly keen to practise capsize drill (which often involves getting wet)!  We also rig and de-rig the boats ourselves.

Every year we participate in the Bradford Schools Regatta at Doe Park. We usually submit an A and a B team. For the past two years the A team has won this event and the Under 14 trophy has been won by individual BGS students.

Kayaking is also a very popular choice among the group.  It involves fun warm-ups and pupils are taught to control their kayaks effectively.  Some students even go on to do a “paddle power course”.  Towards the end of the afternoon there is usually a game of “pirates” or polo in the boats which everybody thoroughly enjoys!
Sailing takes place every Wednesday and is one of our options for Wednesday afternoon activities.  It’s run by Mr Bright, and currently we are able to take 32 students (in two minibuses).

It is proving an extremely popular activity and I think it’s a fantastic sport to be given the opportunity in which to participate.
