From school to country
Rugby Union is taught to all the boys in the senior school as part of their regular PE & Games lessons, but there is also the opportunity for those who wish, to try for the school teams.
The school fields two teams in each of the Under 12 to Under 15 age groups along with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Under 16 team. The sports department has specialist rugby staff and receives additional coaching assistance from Geoff Wappett, an ex-England Schools and Premiership rugby coach.
Every year the school enters teams in the Daily Mail Cup at Under 18 and Under 15 level, the Yorkshire Cup for Under 14s, Gullivers Invitational Super 16s, the Rosslyn Park tournaments for Under 13, Under 16 and Under 18s and many local and national Sevens tournaments.
The rugby season, which runs from September to February, has seventeen block fixtures both away and at home, which are well supported by the school’s thriving Rugby Parents Association members. There are annual Junior tours in the UK for the Under 15s and younger and a biennial overseas tour for the Sixth Form teams.
As well as travelling to tournaments BGS hosts its own Tens tournaments for Under 12s to Under 14s, a Storm Sevens tournament for Under 15s, Sevens tournament for Under 13s, the Charlie Hodgson Cup for Under 12s and Clock House Festival for Under 8s to Under 11s.
We regularly contribute players to county, regional and national teams and the BGS Rugby Parents’ Association organise a number of very enjoyable social events, including two Christmas Balls, Curry Night, Barbecue, Auction and 400 Club.
