Rowing is a popular activity with pupils throughout the senior school and something not offered by many schools in the region. All pupils have an opportunity to experience rowing and receive instruction during their timetabled Games sessions and it is also an extra-curricular option on Wednesday afternoons through the Rowing Club. The Club also runs two sessions on Saturday mornings. The school is able to offer both Sculling in singles, doubles and quads and Sweep Oar rowing in pairs, fours and eight (senior squad). The Club’s ethos is one of steady and progressive development in a safe environment with opportunities to compete at local, regional and national level. Many of our pupils continue their rowing careers after BGS going on to row/cox/coach at their chosen university.
BGS crews regularly take part in the Boston Marathon, a gruelling 32 mile race from Lincoln to Boston on the river Whitam. A select squad competes in the Vecht Small Boats race in Holland. Other regular events in the calendar are the York Small boats Head, regattas at Bradford, York, Durham, Tees, National School's events and National Championships.
The Boat Club is supported by a very active Parents Association and has its own website at www.bgsbc.co.uk which is maintained by the pupils and where further information about the club is available.
