Cricket is one of the main summer sports at BGS. The school runs 6 teams (1st, 2nd, Under 15, Under 14, Under 13 and Under 12) who all play regular Saturday and mid-week fixtures against other schools in the North of England including Manchester GS, RGS Lancaster, Leeds GS, QEGS Wakefield and St Peter’s York. The 1st XI will play up to 20 matches per season while the Junior teams will play 10 to 12 fixtures. One of the highlights of the season is the annual match between the 1st XI and the MCC. The Junior teams enter a number of competitions, the most important being the Regional Lord’s Taverners competition for the Under 14s which, should we be successful, leads into the National Rounds at Under 15 level. All the teams compete in an ‘unofficial’ competition, the Yorkshire Merit, which includes all games played against most other Yorkshire schools.
Cricket is run by members of the PE and Games staff with help from some members of the academic staff and the school employs a cricket coach, ex-Yorkshire batsman Simon Kellett, who is in attendance at all practice sessions. All teams have winter net sessions during the Spring term and regular practices each week and in Games periods during the Summer term.
The school has a long history of touring. The 1st XI goes away at the end of the Summer term most seasons to destinations in the UK and Europe (Holland and Denmark have been visited in recent years) and every four year the Senior Squad has a major tour to destinations that have included the West Indies, Kenya, USA and Canada and, most recently in 2007, Sri Lanka. In recent years the Junior teams have also enjoyed tours to London and the South East.
Cricket is accessible to all members of the school. Anyone interested in playing can attend practices and put themselves forward for selection. Most of the Junior teams have a squad of 15 or 16 players and although selection is on merit, all the teams operate a rotation policy so that all members of the squad get the opportunity to represent the school during the season.
