Badminton

Badminton is played across all ability levels at BGS. Our main, and over-riding, aim is to encourage participation and develop a sense of enjoyment and pride in all we achieve as a club. We have England and County players within our midst, but operate as a team. Staff freely give up their own time to run sessions, matches, and organise the club.

BATTS (Badminton and Table Tennis Society) sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons (1.30 - 3 pm) where we join with the table tennis club to offer both sports in a fun and relaxed environment. We offer coaching at lunchtime with a well-respected badminton coach and have numerous other lunchtime sessions geared towards different year groups, with most year groups fielding a team. We enter the Bradford League, Yorkshire League, and the English Schools tournament and regularly do well in these. Full details of past achievements can be found in the Bradfordian.

Badminton is a hugely popular sport globally, which is reflected in the demand for it at school. To be selected for a team you need to impress the member of staff looking after the session and show determination and regular attendance at practices. Where appropriate we have a squad system and we aim to involve as many players as possible.

Our home night for fixtures is Wednesday. Most matches start around 4pm, finishing around 5.45pm, so you need to be prepared for this schedule. Away matches are dictated by the opposition court availability and again, you must organise yourself to ensure that you can make it. A fixture list is distributed at various stages within the year as schedules change. Our expectation is that you keep on top of this and do not rely upon others to organise you.

We also try to do what we can to keep things interesting: we have organised trips to see the All England Championships in Birmingham, and offer a full day’s badminton coaching to all interested parties from any age group. Future ventures might include coaching courses to our pupils to enable them to move up the ladder. We are also in the process of developing links with outside clubs which use our facilities in the evening, and this may well lead to further participation in matches- watch this space!
