The politics department has been established for many years at BGS. There are two full time teachers who are both experienced A level examiners in the subject. There are approximately 30 politics students in each Sixth Form year group. The department has been one of the most successful in terms of A level results in recent years. We study British, European and American politics. In the Upper Sixth there is a trip to the USA where we visit all the important political sites in Washington DC with organised speakers from the Congress, The Supreme Court, the political parties and pressure groups. We also visit the historical sites of Philadelphia, the birthplace of the American Revolution, and New York. There we take in the usual tourist sites such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty and other cultural/educational visits to the Rikki Lake show and basketball games. Politics involves the study of current affairs and could be usefully combined with economics in this regard. Similarly, the examination requirements of interpreting data and documents, short answers and essay writing could be usefully combined with the study of history and English. Many of our students go on to read politics at university and to careers in journalism, the media, business, law and central and local government.
