Economics

The department places great emphasis on familiarising students with contemporary issues in the world of economics and business. We hope that by the time they finish their course they will be in a position to make informed judgements about complex issues such as whether the UK should join the single currency, or if it possible to eliminate poverty. Students are therefore encouraged to take an active interest in how the world works.

The department subscribes to The Economist and The Financial Times and students are encouraged to subscribe to Economics Today and/or The Economic Review. The department promotes critical thinking skills and encourages all students to become independent learners.

The department enters teams for the Bank of England/Times Interest Rate Challenge. In 2009 the team were runners up in the Area Final winning £650.

Economics is not taught outside the Sixth Form. Students are entered for the AS and A2 specifications set by AQA.

The relevance and interest generated by their studies explains why a significant proportion of our students go on to take economics or politics philosophy and economics at university.
