Chemistry

Chemistry is taught throughout the school in one of five brand new state of the art laboratories. The methods used vary from the most traditional to the most modern. Interactive VLE’s are used at AS and A2 level and interactive software packages via projection systems are utilised at all other levels.

The AQA syllabus is used at AS and A2 levels with the internal ISA route offered for practical assessment in both year groups.  AQA is also used for the compulsory GCSE course but is being phased out and replaced with the more traditional and demanding Edexcel International GCSE, which commences teaching in the 3rd form and is taught through to the fifth form.  The department's results both at A-level and GCSE level are consistently well above the school's high average. Over the past four years the A-level average for grades A and B is over 80%  whereas at GCSE  wher the subject is compulsory for all pupils the A* and A average is over 70%.

The department regularly takes place in many extra curricular chemistry competitions including The Salters’ Chemistry Festival, Top of the Bench, Young Analysts. Cambridge Chemistry Challenge C3L6 and the RSC International Chemistry Olympiad.
