Business Studies

Every society has to deal with the problem of scarce resources, their distribution and exchange. Business Studies confronts these issues in an informed and critical way. Unit 1 (starting and running a business) investigates the motives for starting a business, spotting market opportunities and how an entrepreneur sources and combines resources. Unit 2 investigates how a business can survive and looks at four key functional areas – marketing, human resources, operations and finance. If you are a fan of Dragons Den or The Apprentice then you are sure to enjoy Business Studies.

In the second year of study we recognise that successful businesses have to respond to change as their external environment (be it in terms of economics, green issues, competition, politics or ethics) is dynamic. We critically assess the impact of globalisation, social responsibility, government intervention and other key issues. You will be expected to question the aims and objectives of firms  and extend your vision of business behaviour beyond recognisable high street names towards the global environment, with its footloose multinationals, income disparities, protectionist regimes and envrionmental concerns.

Academically, Business Studies can deliver excellent grades. In 2008, 87% of our Upper Sixth A level candidates gained A or B grades with 22 out of 30 being awarded an A grade. Financially, research suggests that students who continue to study Economics or Business Studies at university can expect a substantial premium on their starting salary, beaten only by medics and lawyers. Pupils who have taken Business Studies AS/A level at BGS have gone on to study a range of diverse undergraduate courses – Management, Politics, Psychology, Sport, Dentistry, Geography and History to name but a few. A few have successfully entered the workplace directly after A level where they have used their entrepreneurial skills and business acumen to start their own businesses or they have entered a course of study leading to Chartered Accountant status.
