A talk eighteen months ago to the Inter Faith Forum by former BGS teacher, Keith Thompson, sparked off the chain of events
that culminated, in March, with the school planting its own forest of 6000 trees at Laycock near Keighley. Throughout, pupils were involved surveying the land, liaising with Forest of Bradford, and encouraging their peers to look at their own impact on the environment and to do something about it. The Carbon Debt Calculator on the website helped pupils work out their footprint for 2006 and how many trees each would need to plant to offset their carbon emissions. Fifth and Sixth formers started the planting on Saturday 3 March, with a moment of silence and dedication in memory of James Brearley. James' parents planted the first tree in memory of their son, after whom the wood is named. The following week saw pupils from all years in school, and staff, spending half a day planting trees in cool but sunny weather.
