On Wednesday 14 September we were honoured to welcome Rudi Leavor (BGS 1938-43) to lead the commemoration of OB Leopold Charles Nathan, who lost his life on 14 September 1916.
Mr Leavor began the service with a moving introduction before a reading from the Book of Isaiah and Commitment to Peace. As is customary as part of the WW1 project, In Flanders Fields was read, before the placing of a memorial cross. Further readings were delivered and The Last Post was played by pupil Henry Taggart.
Rudi is President and Chairman of the Bradford Reform Synagogue and attended Bradford Grammar School after he, his parents and his sister left Nazi Germany. He has regularly returned to BGS to speak to current pupils about his experiences.
The BGS WW1 project is a collaboration between the School, the Old Bradfordians Association and the Old Bradfordians Club (London) Ltd. Former Head of History Nick Hooper is researching and writing biographies of each Old Bradfordian who lost their life in the War. Each and every OB is then remembered on the 100th anniversary of their death with a service at the School’s War Memorial.
Wednesday’s service was also attended by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, current and former staff of the School and pupils.
