Why did you choose Bradford Grammar School (BGS) Sixth Form?

“Firstly the reputation of BGS is really good.

My mum and I looked through the papers and the league tables for Bradford and BGS was really high. Also all my friends are here and it’s got a really good atmosphere. Plus the extra-curricular activities are fantastic and the new subjects you get offered, such as social sciences in particular, are what I wanted, as this is where my interests lie.

I also remember going to an options and careers evening at BGS that really impressed me. The options evening showed you what the subjects are all about and the careers evening had people come in to say what they studied at BGS and what they’re doing now. Matt Kelleher, Managing Director for Morrison’s, was there and he had a massive impact on me. I thought, ‘that’s the job I really want to do.’ It just goes to show that at BGS you can also make very important, life-changing connections and get fantastic work experience at the same time. That really helped me make my decision.

What do you enjoy most about BGS?

“I love the School life in general. Sport is fantastic, I play rugby and I’m in the swimming team.

Teachers are great because they help you decide what you’re good at and where your interests are. I also really enjoy the way teachers conduct lessons. There are small classes and it’s very calm so you get through the work rather than having disruptions. The students are always encouraged to get along, get on with it and encourage each other all the way.

What co-curricular activities do you take part in and how have they helped you?

“Rugby and swimming have helped me with my team building skills.

It’s also helped me with making a lot of friends from the year above which is great as we now come together through a lot of activities.

In economics, there’s sometimes a book club to go to, to consolidate on what we’ve done. There are also various homework clubs. There are so many opportunities you can take advantage of and the extra-curricular activities really help you to develop as a person.”

How do you feel you’ve changed since being at BGS?

“Well it’s a lot more mature here. They teach a certain way and make you feel like an adult by giving you more responsibility. That’s a big thing, and the environment I feel is better than other schools.

At BGS there’s a really positive sense of doing well, not just academically but in everything you do. If you like getting A’s and A*’s it’s seen as cool. It sort of instils a competitive side to everyone—in a good way—and makes you want to do well, instead of just getting through it. Teachers really push you to your highest ability.

How is Bradford Grammar School preparing you for further study/your career?

“It’s giving me a good idea of what I like such as the Marketing, Business and Economics side of things.

But I also think BGS gives you skills that you can take through your life. It doesn’t just provide academic excellence, but provides you with the confidence and all-round approach to go for whatever it is you’d like to pursue in the future.”

What would you say to other pupils thinking of joining Sixth Form at BGS?

“I’d say definitely come for a taster day and see if you like it.

Don’t just look at the lessons, but actually sit in for half a day and really take part in everything the School has to offer. I was allowed to do that and it made me want to come even more. But also be prepared to work hard. At BGS you do work harder but you feel great about it, because you’re constantly learning something and improving yourself.

“It doesn’t just provide academic excellence, but provides you with the confidence and all-round approach to go for whatever it is you’d like to pursue in the future.”
