Ski Trip

The Junior School pupils had a brilliant week during their trip to Risoul. The mixed ability group enjoyed excellent ski conditions. The beginners progressed well and advanced skiers enjoyed a variety of challenging runs and mogul fields. In the evenings pupils took part in lots of fun games and activities.

Pentathlon Club

Pentathlon Club

Thirty Junior School pupils are currently receiving training from the British Pentathlon Association in the disciplines of shooting and fencing. Coaches visit Clock House on a weekly basis to provide top quality coaching and a great experience. For the majority taking part this is an introduction to something completely new.

Bujagali Trust

Bujagali Trust

A collection at the end of the Spring Concert raised £355.78 for the Bujagali Trust. Kevin Riley, Headmaster of Bradford Grammar School, is the Chairman of the Trust and was delighted to receive the cheque on their behalf. The Bujagali Trust aims to develop educational opportunities for young people in Uganda, East Africa.

Spring Concert

Junior School pupils took part in an amazing end of term Spring Concert. During the evening the Choir sang Any Dream Will Do, the Orchestra played The Entertainer and the Rock Band performed Eight Days a Week. The concert featured all Junior School music ensembles and the winners of the recent House Music Competition. Prizes were awarded to Thomas Austin - Musician of the Year, Han Zhao - Winner of the Wilkinson Trophy for best pianist.

The Junior School's annual House Music Competition took place on Wednesday March 14. Clock House was delighted to welcome back Mr Barry Jordan as the adjudicator, who heard more than one hundred and thirty performances during what was a long but enjoyable day. All the winners performed at the end of term Spring Concert.

House Cross Country

House Cross Country

This years winners of the house cross country run were Founders. All pupils from the school took part and counted towards the final score for each House. Individual winners were Ben Moon year 6 boys, Milly Fewless-Jones year 5/6 girls, Henry Miller year 5 boys, Amrit Sharma J4, Ben Grimmitt J3 and Oliver Scales J2.

Viking Trip

Viking Trip

As part of the year six History studies on Vikings, the year group visited Houlgate village to be Vikings for the day.  The children took part in guard training before guarding the village from Saxons.  They also cleaned houses and made bread and pottery.  The busy day concluded with a Viking banquet at which the children entertained the Lord of the Manor with songs, stories and jokes.  Click here to see photographs from the day.

British Cycling

British Cycling

Throughout February and March British Cycling are running a six week programme within school for years five and six.  This is an exciting opportunity where pupils will be taught skills by a national and international level cyclist who has a wealth of experience working with talented GB athletes. 

U10 Netball winners

Rugby and Netball Festival 2012

This year’s festival was a huge success attracting schools from all over the North of England from as far as Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Northumberland and Durham.  Over 530 pupils from years four to six played rugby or netball in their own mini tournaments. Most games were extremely close with some very exciting matches.  The U10 girls played extremely well finishing in first place.

The cheerful smiles of our U11 hockey team reflect their success – they had just beaten GSAL (B) team in the mini-hockey tournament. Stunning performances from our girls could not give them overall victory, however as always they played their best, supported each other and enjoyed their 5 games in freezing conditions. As the winners were announced hail stones began to fall, ensuring that victory speeches were kept short! Parental support was enthusiastic and much appreciated.

All the pupils from Junior School were part of an amazing end of term Christmas Concert. The audience were entertained with an array of solo, year group and whole school performances, together with ensembles and readings.

Bradford Curry Project

On the 9th December two volunteers from the Bradford Curry Project came in to school to speak to the pupils about the project and to collect items of food that had been brought in. A cheque was also presented for £432.59 which had been raised at the end of this years Christmas concert.

South Pole Expedition

At the beginning of December current parent, Professor Adam Carey, will be taking part in an expedition to the South Pole. Adam has very generously offered to raise funds for the Stephen Davidson Bursary Fund. If you would like to sponsor Adam for this amazing challenge and read more regarding why he chose the Bursary Fund at BGS, please visit http://www.justgiving.com/Adam-Carey. Once at the South Pole he will raise the Bradford Grammar Junior School flag. Adam is pictured with the Junior School flag at the North Pole.

BGS was delighted to lead the Lord Mayor's Parade and support its former pupil, David Wootton, as he became the Lord Mayor of the City of London. Thirty-three pupils, four members of staff and six former pupils received a fantastic response from the media and the 600,000+ crowd. For images of the occasion click here

Harvest Appeal

Harvest Appeal

Junior School pupils raised £926.57 at this year's Harvest Appeal by organising fundraising games and activities, and by selling buns, cakes and snacks. Once again the Junior School have sponsored four children overseas through Actionaid. Click here to see the full set of photographs.

Science festival

Woodwind Assembly

Paul Smales DT teacher with hidden talents gave a whole school woodwind assembly. He played Flute, Piccolo, Alto Flute, Oboe, Alto Sax, Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, and a B flat Clarinet. The assembly came to a wonderful finale where he played ‘I’ve got rhythm’ using all of the instruments in turn. The pupils were astounded at his ability and repertoire and responded by clapping in time to the music throughout the finale. He then left to sit in a darkened room with an oxygen tent.

British Science Festival

At the beginning of term all pupils from years five and six visited The British Science Festival held at Bradford College. The pupils took part in a variety of science investigations involving chemistry, sight and sound, birds of prey, science of the circus, forces and mobile phone technology. The day proved to be both enjoyable and interesting.

We were thrilled to have Gaynor Barnes speak and present the prizes at this year's Speech Day. Gaynor Barnes has established herself as one of the most recognisable faces of ITV Yorkshire and now presents Calendar's regional news bulletins within GMTV. All the prizewinners were delighted to receive their chosen books from Gaynor at this wonderful occasion.

Cheerleading Champions

On the 25 June thirteen girls from Years' Four, Five and Six took part in the UKCA National Schools Cheerleading Championships held in Manchester. The girls took part in the KS2 Pom, small group section against schools from all over the country. The girls have worked incredibly hard and it showed - they were absolutely amazing and thoroughly deserved their win.

Athletics

Athletics Success

The Junior School triumphed in the recent North East Region IAPS Athletics Championships with the highest number of qualifiers from any of the IAPS schools that took part.  Six of our boys and girls will represent the North of England at the National Finals in Birmingham in July.  Natasha Dawson (Hurdles), Phoebe Ogden (Long Jump), Jessica Manning (1500m), Khizar Shezad (Discus) and Brandon St Catherine (Javelin) all won their individual events.  Ben Scholefield came second in the 100m but posted a time that was faster than the national qualifying time and so qualifies for the team. 

Spring Fair

Spring Fair

This year’s Spring Fair organised by the Parents’ Association included a Bucking Bronco, coconut shy, numerous stalls, games, raffles, a recycling competition and football tournament.  The day was about fun as well as fundraising and with the hard work of the Parents' Association, staff, pupils and volunteers it was a huge success on both counts.

Scrap Yard Trip

Scrap Yard Trip

On 3rd May 2011, J4 visited Crossley-Evans Scrap Yard in Shipley. They toured the site, asking questions about how metal gets processed and transported to be remade into new things. This was very topical, as J4 have been studying recycling and the properties of materials in science. They all particularly enjoyed seeing a car being crushed into a small cuboid, and seeing the electromagnet cranes at work. They even weighed the whole year group on the lorry weigh group: apparently they were over 1.6 tonnes!

Red Nose Day

Red Nose Day

On 18 March the Junior School pupils were a mass of red with vibrant clothes, red wigs and noses, feather boas and hats. As part of the day, the Junior School pupils ran all sorts of red nose day themed games including bobbing for red noses, red space hopper races and sold all sorts of fantastic treats. Fun was had by all whilst raising £668 for an excellent cause.

Gardening Club

Flourishing Crops

The Gardening Club and its crops continue to flourish. They have had a successful crop of potatoes and collected the last of the rhubarb, beans, courgettes, marrows and pumpkins. The young gardeners have turned over the raised beds, started to thin out the strawberry patch and planted garlic to grow over the winter.

School Daze

School Daze

The Junior School production this year was called School Daze, a play about the reminiscences of Junior School pupils as they wait for the bus on their last day in Clock House. There were too many outstanding performances to mention individuals; the production was a true team effort with stunning results.
