On a warm and sunny afternoon the sixth Clare Lyness Challenge Cup, between Bees Hockey Club and West Yorkshire Police, took place at Bradford Grammar School. Clare tragically lost her fight with cancer nearly seven years ago and the Club, plus Police, spent a day remembering her and celebrating her life.
The memorial was set up in Clare’s name to celebrate the enjoyment she got from the sport of hockey as a player for both Bingley Bees and West Yorkshire Police (WYP). The cup has been an annual event ever since her tragic death.
In the true spirit of the game the two matches were both played in good heart, with a competitive edge! The Ladies were the first to play with a skilful and entertaining match encompassing end-to-end hockey. Also a high scoring match with a final score of 6-5 to the Police.
Mixed was next with a fast and crowd pleasing first half dominated by the West Yorkshire Police team resulting in two goals lead by half time. The second half was just as competitive with vital saves keeping both teams in with a chance. Bees took the game to WYP and applied pressure on the WYP defence. The full time whistle saw a score line of 2-2- wonderful hockey!
In all, a great day of hockey in memory of a super player. To round the day off a BBQ was organised at Bradford and Bingley Sports Club where the Challenge Cup was presented to the West Yorkshire Police Ladies Hockey Team.
